Till Death Do Us Part – And She Meant It!

– Here you go, my dearest and best husband in the world. My gift to you on this happy occasion.

Vicky Soteriou said softly as she handed her husband Chris a small box wrapped in shiny gift paper, a wide smile spreading across her face. Chris looked at her with eyes full of love and gratitude, then gently took her hand and kissed it before replying:

– Thank you, my love, the most wonderful wife in the world. Just having you by my side tonight is the greatest gift of all.

That night, the couple was celebrating Chris’s 44th birthday. Since both were of Greek descent, Vicky insisted on celebrating this joyful occasion at a small Greek restaurant on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia. She also insisted on driving her husband’s modern sports car herself on the way to the restaurant—a gesture Chris greatly appreciated, knowing well that she generally hated driving and hadn’t driven in years. He didn’t even mind when she parked the car in a dark, somewhat secluded alley, despite there being an empty spot in front of the restaurant.

Chris and Vicky enjoyed a lively night at the restaurant, eating, drinking, and dancing. Everyone there joined in the celebration, and many undoubtedly felt some envy over the strong bond and passion that connected the couple, even after 13 years of marriage, which many considered a perfect match. They were wealthy, had three children, and adored each other—what more could any couple want?

Late that night, the couple left the restaurant, walking slowly toward the dark alley where Vicky had parked the car, holding hands like young lovers. Just before they reached the car, Chris noticed someone standing in the shadows. A wave of unease passed over him, and he slowed his pace. But Vicky pulled his hand, urging him to keep going. A few steps past the stranger, Chris suddenly felt a strong hand grab him from behind, followed by something cold swiftly sliding across his neck. It was a sudden attack that knocked him to the ground, blood spilling from his wounds as the unknown assailant stabbed him repeatedly. Chris didn’t care much for himself; his main concern was for his wife’s safety. He shouted, “Run, Vicky! Save yourself! Take care of our children! I love you…” Then he lost consciousness and felt nothing more.

When Chris regained consciousness, he found himself lying in a large bed in a white-walled room, surrounded by medical equipment. Vicky was sitting beside him, tears streaming down her face. He wanted to speak to her and find out what had happened, but a sharp pain in his neck prevented him from talking. She wrapped her arm around him and said tenderly: ” Shh… it’s alright, love. You’re safe now. We were attacked by a homeless man while returning to the car.”

What Chris didn’t know at that time was that he had spent thirteen days in a coma. The attacker had attempted to slit his throat and stabbed him six times in various parts of his body before fleeing. He had lost a lot of blood and was barely breathing when the ambulance arrived. Doctors called his survival nothing short of a miracle.

Vicky was the sole witness to the attack, but her testimony was of little help to the police. She told them the alley was too dark to identify the attacker’s face.

In the days that followed, Chris’s health steadily improved. Vicky only left his side to check on their children at home. To everyone, she was the epitome of a loyal and devoted wife, and Chris felt immense gratitude for her presence.

Eager to find the attacker, Vicky called the police daily to check on the investigation. Her brother-in-law expected her to be overjoyed when he told her the police had arrested the suspect two weeks after the attack. But instead, she froze, her face turning pale as if struck by lightning, and hurriedly left the hospital, saying she had to tend to her children. The next day, Vicky didn’t come to the hospital, which was unusual, and Chris’s calls to her went unanswered despite his persistent attempts.

Chris’s worry for his wife was short-lived. That evening, a police detective came to see him with news that shook him to his core. The officer told him plainly that Vicky had come to the police earlier that day and confessed that the attacker was actually her lover, and that they had planned together to kill Chris.

Since the attacker was already in custody, Vicky had no choice but to confess in person, perhaps to avoid being arrested at home in front of their teenage daughter and twin children. Her confession shocked everyone, especially Chris, who was plunged into a state of disbelief and sorrow lasting several days.

“We were completely in sync. She was a wonderful wife and mother. There were no problems between us—our marriage was perfect,” Chris told a reporter outside the courtroom, shaking his head sadly. “She used to tell me every day, ‘Till death do us part,’ and she showed me great love. She never questioned what I did when she was away, and I never questioned her. Our marriage was built on trust.” He added bitterly, “At least from my point of view.”

But Chris’s blind trust was misplaced. During her 40th birthday celebration in 2007, Vicky met a man named Ari Dimitrakis, also of Greek descent, married, and a driver. Their relationship quickly blossomed into a passionate love affair. They were so madly in love that police once caught them completely naked in the backseat of a car parked on a side street. Their passion was so intense that they tattooed each other’s names—on the finger beneath their wedding rings and on the neck behind their hair.

Dimitrakis later admitted to police that Vicky first broached the idea of killing her husband in 2009, though it began as a joke. He went along with it because she became more affectionate and submissive in bed whenever they talked about killing Chris.

Vicky was, in truth, a brilliant actress—far more talented than many Hollywood professionals. She was cheating on her husband and plotting his murder while flawlessly masking her emotions, showing him love and care so genuine that he never doubted her loyalty for a moment.

Some may wonder: if she loved Dimitrakis so much, why didn’t she just divorce Chris to be with him?

No. People like Vicky never do that. She was not only deceitful and manipulative but also greedy. She wanted it all—lover and her husband’s fortune. Most of their assets were in her name, including a shared $250,000 bank deposit and a $200,000 life insurance policy on Chris. She stood to lose a lot if she divorced him, but if he died, she would inherit everything and live happily with her poor taxi-driver lover, who lived with his wife and children in a small basement in his mother’s house.

Frankly, I’m puzzled by this woman. Is she cunning or incredibly foolish? She sacrificed a warm, luxurious life and marriage for what? A beggar lover!

Of course, Vicky couldn’t keep up the pretense in court. She finally dropped the mask and revealed her true self. She showed no remorse or offered any convincing excuse for her betrayal. So bold and shameless was she that she called Dimitrakis in prison, telling him she still loved him and would love him forever. Her arrogance turned everyone against her, even her children.

Before sentencing, the judge told her, “It’s true you were not holding the knife the night of the attack, but you intended to kill your husband just as if you had the knife in your hand. It is hard to imagine the painful betrayal your husband must have felt upon learning that his wife and her lover plotted to kill him on his birthday night of all nights.”

Vicky was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with no possibility of parole or sentence reduction for nine years. Dimitrakis received a reduced sentence of seven years for cooperating with the police and testifying against her—a cruel irony, considering he was the one she betrayed everything for.

In 2022, Vicky was released after serving 10 years, under conditional release, and reportedly lives with relatives.

As for the betrayed husband, upon hearing of her release, he said:

“You never forget what happened, but you must forgive and move on. That’s life—ups and downs. I hit rock bottom but got back up again. Now life is beautiful once more… a new wife and a new lifestyle.”
